Can't be as fast as if invoked on the client, but difficult to answer as it depends ...
You looked for alternatives, and the alternative provided is a server solution - try it out ! Work's fine at our compagny.

Those progs/tools do exists which can distribute whatever needed to
client pc's. However, I'm not familiar with those. Maybe someone else in this NG can elaborate ?
