One other consideration: There are ODBC drivers that do not require an Oracle client installed...

Disclaimer: I am not an employee of, nor shareholder in, that company but I use their drivers in a Unix based ETL tool and find them to be as fast or faster than using OCI to connect and much faster than 'traditional' ODBC/SqlNet combo..
