If you are just doing a simple spool, I have found a low tech solution that works well. Name your file with an .xls extension and spool the file as tab delimited by changing your column separators.
set colsep ' '
(Where the tab key was pressed between the single quotes.)
As tab delimited text is the default setting in Excel, the resulting file opens without the import dialog.
The only problem with this method is that any numbers of ~15 digits or greater are automatically converted into scientific notation and loose precision.
