ORA-01503 : CREATE CONTROLFILE FAILED

I installed Oracle9i on my Sunblade (Solaris 8) to study the stuff. After 30 million years of configuration and installing, I wanted to start a new DB by running the dbca tool. This stops every time at 50% with the message : ORA-01503 : CREATE CONTROLFILE FAILED. I've been searching on this for days now and can't find a solution.

I've tested the following :
- I am a member of the dba group,

• I'm running the tool as a dba member.
• the folder where the controlfiles will come, can be written to by the group.
• the controlfile doesn't already exist.

What can be wrong ? How can I get more detail about the problem and can I perform this creation manually (then I can maybe isolate the problem).
