Description:

A manager is needed to define the technical future direction of the client/server database environments specifically SQL Server 2000 but will also include UDB version 7.2 & Oracle 8.1. Understanding or experience in DB2 v6 is required.

The primary focus will be to establish a continuously available, fault tolerant database environment that can support a growing self-service, internet and browser based application environment. In addition to the basic job experience and educational background of a Level III technical manager, this individual must have experience in driving definition of a database environment where there is no internal expertise. This includes working closely with application teams with new or evolving skill sets and less than clear requirements and deadlines, establish strategic relationships with a selected vendors, contractors & industry experts working to facilitate enhancements to products, resolve issues and create workarounds, defining aspects of platform architecture through gaining responsibility and ownership of new operating system, hardware (processing & storage), and support functions, working with a young and inexperienced team.

This manager must be good at accessing each DBA's strengths & weaknesses at an individual level, nurturing them through realizing they don’t know what they don’t know, assess and hire appropriate skills, and preparing development plans to improve their knowledge through training, mentoring, & defining work for successful and repeatable application of skill.
