SUggest you get a new copy of the product - check http://technet.oracle.com > software - the book is still valid, the software that came with it seems, well so, so ...

JDeveloper was originally twinned from Borland JBuilder - IDE is very similar. Latest version is significantly different internally but with similar look and feel. The latest versions are fairly stable. A bit slow (but then I also run the App Server and the Database on the same machine).
