Multi-threading using Oracle 8i with the OCI interface

Has anyone used the Oracle OCI API to run multi-threaded code? This is using POSIX threads and not the OCI threading.
It appears that access to the environment handle is not thread-safe. So I am unable to use multiple connections independently of each other. Do anyone have experience in using OCI in a multi-threaded application?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
