8i client install crashes on NT4

I'm trying to get the oracle client installed on one of several NT4 computers.
I have a CD release 3 for 8.1.7 that says its for 95/98/NT/2000 and the only os I've been able to get it working on is 2000
does this stuff work on NT?
is there a solution?
