If you're backing up an Oracle database server as part of a group of machines, the Agent is worth its
weight in gold :-)

The agent will put each tablespace into backup mode, back it up, and then put it back online.

If you are simply trying to backup a database each night, then as Cliff said, it's cheaper and easier to
write a scipt yourself.
