Option 1) run your 8.1.6 exp against the clients 8.1.7 database. Obviously they need to open port 1521 or 1526 and you need to use use_shared_sockets=true in sqlnet.ora
Option 2) travel to the client and install your 8.1.6 dba client software on a system behind the firewall, and run your export at the client's location.
