What platform are you running on. The recommended approach is to use Oracles RMAN application. It is robust and reliable. To use this application with a tape device, you will need a media management library (MML) to interface between Oracle and the tape device. The MML that I used was from Legato called Networker. You can also write directly to disk if you don't have the MML. This solution worked perfectly and automatically for years for me with no problems. Of course we were running Sun Solaris as our OS which easily allowed us to script and schedule the backups ( all kinds, full, table, hot etc...). I have also used OEM 2.1 for general administration and it fixed a lot of bugs in 2.0. Never used it for backups though. I think OEM 2.1 would work fine. You will have to get your Intelligent Agent configured properly and start the OEM application server on the database server side.
