Enterprise User Security and User/Schema Separation

From what I gather by reading the documents, the only way to get User/Schema Separation is by using Enterprise User Security. Is this correct? I like the idea of not needing a new schema for each user, but I am reluctant to get into LDAP and all the other technologies of Enterprise User Security.
Any thought on this would be very welcome.
