Can't connect to the database: please help

I recently installed oracle client on win98. When i try to connect to a remote database using sql*plus, I get an error saying:
ERROR:
ORA-12514: Message 12514 not found; product=RDBMS80; facility=ORA
If you have any idea of what this error means, or if you know what the
problem is, please help.
