developer 6i for linux installation

Hi,
I am trying to install developer 6i for linux on a mandrake-6.1 system. On
this system I have both oracle 8 and 8i. However since I use 8i most of the
time I have compressed the 8 (and the database files).
When I run orainst and try to install browser 6i (to start with) I get the
message "rdbms" not installed. (This is when I point ORACLE_HOME to 8i). I
tried setting ORACLE_HOME to new dir. But that doesn't help. Do I need
oracle 8 installation to be able to install 8i components?
