XML and Oracle

Hi guys,
Iam playing with Oracle's XML Parser in Oracle 8.1.6. How do folks typically store XML Data in the Oracle database. Is the file stored in a Long column ? If that is the case, aren't we replacing the database with XML and not using the power of a RDBMS ? Any thoughts or am I totally offbase here .
