I saw the DBA setting it up once.
He has used Oracle Enterprise Manager extensively, which makes me believe it is relatively simple to install and manage.
If using Oracle 8.1.5 or older, applications must be revised to handle
some extra instructions.
Oracle 8.1.6 (8i R2) frees developers from this overhead.
FailSafe option is a standard feature. It keeps one backup machine and transfers all processes to it in case of failure. It may be used as entry level solution and requires no change in applications.
I consider OPS the best option for high availability, specially on Sun hardware.
Oracle provides an white paper addressing both features. It is available at http://technet.oracle.com (free sign up) If you prefer I can send you by email.
