oracle reports

I had been writing reports from our databases just using pl/sql and stored procedures. So I thought it would be nice to try out oracle reports and after installation, enterprise manager, sql plus and a few other things just don't work any more. I get tns unable to resolve service name as an error message. So I found about six tnsnames.ora file on my machine, found the right one, copied over the other ones thinking that might work and nope. I would really like to be able to use these, but being new to oracle and the available tools, I have no idea what to do, any suggestions??
