Win NT plus33 termout problem

Using the Windows NT GUI sqlplus from version 8 (Plus80w.exe) when I do:
set termout off
Then anything I select does not show up on-screen. This is useful for creating a file of the results using spooling.
Using the Windows NT command line sqlplus from version 7.3.4 or Solaris 7.3.4, setting termout off seems to have no effect. When I do a "show all", it does indeed show that termout is set to "off", but it still displays the results of my query on-screen.
Does anybody know how to turn the on-screen output on and off at will?
