Customizing Oracle Financials

Have a situation where a new install of Oracle Financials is going in and we are expecting to be tasked with developing new functionality to integrate with the financials product as well as various levels of modification to the Oracle Financials themselves.
The developers are very green - having recently completed the Forms and Reports classes.
What advice can you give [in addition to "DON'T DO IT"] about modifying Oracle Financials ??
Where does one learn best practices and method for altering / changing / integrating with the Oracle Financials screens and reports ??
What are the considerations for keeping local modifications from conflicting with future (unknown) patches and upgrades??
Are there some techniques (like give the user only a button on the original [production] screen to access a custom screen to see /access custom work ) that are generally safer than others ??
Are there courses or books for this area ??
