Workflow : Wait Activity & Background Engines

I am trying to use a "Wait" activity within a Workflow process. I understood that I had to launch a Background Engine to complete this activity once it gets deferred. I try to execute the wf_engine.background() command but the Wait activity does not get completed and the process remains stopped.
So ? Who can help me ?
