I think it's basically down to the emergence of

The internet
'Free' copie of Oracle software
'Free' copies of operating systems (Linux in all its forms) Oracle certification
Versions of Oracle that run on PCs

Most of the newbie questions can be answered by reading the docs (admittedly not so easy to find stuff now they're on CD - personal opinion :-) ) or doing a suitable training course. Alternatively a quick call to Oracle Support would clear a lot of the questions. It is obvious that many of the posters have no support because of the reasons above.

It's obvious that a lot of people are doing this at home - the 'does anyone run OAS on Windows 2000?' kind of question or 'how do I find out the names of my tables?'

Also as the majority of posters are from the USA, they do courses in college on Oracle, so we get homework questions as well !

[Quoted] As to Kenneth's comment about reading the previous replies - I am not aware of an FAQ ever being posted in this newsgroup. In comp.unix.aix, [Quoted] to which I also subscribe, the FAQ is posted every 2 months and is 6 messages long.

[Quoted] I guess most of them don't realise that its really helpful to find out where you can get information from (manuals, web sites, magazines etc) because there will come a time, when they have a real job, that newsnet is of no use at all.

Just my 2p (as we say in the UK :-)))

Alex

P.S

Best question so far:

 What is Oracle Gateway?
I need to know what it is, and need it implimented by tonight!
