Tim,
  You're right about an LOV Find searching all columns, and about way a %text% search normally works. (scratched my head for a while when records were being returned that didn't contain the string I was looking for in the column the LOV was attached to, the string was there, only in a different column). That leaves the question of why you are not getting the return set you expect. LOV Find searches are case sensitive, so is it possible that the case of each of the characters of the entered string does not match the stored data exactly? If you are looking for %Bigg% and the name is stored as 'BOB BIGGINS', you won't find it.
