wdblsnr on port 80, security risk?

Acording to documentation, I can run wdblsnr on port < 1024 only as root
my doubt is , if this is a security threat , I just compare to the documentation of apache web server and they use a configurable unprivileged user to handle the requests on port 80. So my question is , is there a security risk on running wdblsnr as root to handle the requests?.
