  You might VERY CAREFULLY experiment with changing the user's initialzation setting for NLS_LANG. Where this is stored is O/S dependent. In a Windows 3.11 environment I believe it's in the user's ORACLE.INI file and possibly in CAUPREFS.ORA as well. On an Windows NT system, it's in the registry (somewhere in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - ORACLE - ALL_HOMES). I have no familiarity with other O/S's, but similar file/setting must exist. Please keep in mind that I have never done this and therefore don't know for sure if it will accomplish you goal, do nothing, or totally screw up the works, but the parameter is out there and is editable.
