Designer Limitations

I've been working on a web front end to our databse and am curious
as to the amount of information or number of fields I can have on a
web page.
Recently we added columns to all our tables and certain modules
(after recompiliation) do not work. I get a "request failed"
message.
It seems anything more than 17 fields and the modules fail. Is there a configuration problem here ?
