It seems that we had to run the Pro*C installation a second time on Linux to get it working.
Don't play with any of the option selections - they don't seem to work right.

The 8.1.5 Pro*C is bad enough on Solaris, but the Linux port is much worse.
It dumps core if you include <math.h>.
