Can't DESC table in SQL PLUS (Have proper synonyms and privs on owners table)

I have a user (x) with all privileges on tables owned by (y). Synonyms are created properly in (y's) schema. User (x) can SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT and DELETE but cannot DESC table in SQL PLUS withour prefixing tablename with y's schema. Why?
User (x) can DESC table in SVRMGR!!
