Thanks, Glen. After my post, we found a syntax error in the package. It compiled correctly once we fixed that.
The error was a missing BEGIN in a procedure. I gather that Oracle7.1 had problems doing anything intelligent with errors of that type, but that later versions might be better. We're on our way to 7.3.4 by year's end.
