Sure looks to me, at least in Oracle 7.4, that UTL_FILE only offers GET_LINE.
You may have to find another way to get the data
if you can't get a fudge of ASCII to work....
Some ideas: write a Pro*C program.
Use loader to dump the file to a work table...
etc etc.
