I think "interest" is the key. Pick a direction that you are really interested in, and leave the rest to the market (keep you eyes widely open for it). Chances are that if you are not really interested in it, DB admin or Dev, you are probably not likely to become good at it, and then no matter how good a field it could be, it would not be yours. Personal interest and market demand are the two driving forces in people's career choices. To me, the first one is always the more important.
