I too have had this and have never found a good solution. Sometimes it is users that didn't log off and left a cartesian join running. It is always good to make sure that no-one can stay logged on indefinitely. But this is not always the cause.

What I would suggest is that you issue your normal shudown. Wait some reasonable period of time and then issue a shutdown immediate. Then wait a reasonable amount of time and issue a shutdown abort just before beginning the backup processes.

With any luck at all the shutdown immediate and shutdown abort will serve no useful purpose. But when they are needed they will do the job.

Now whether you want to deal with any possible problems in the morning is another question.
