SQLSTATE 7200 (ORA-1466) SQL PHASE ERROR

I have a large Pro*c program that executes the following statement amongst other things
"Select max(<field_name<) from < table_name.
As part of the system testing I am adjusting the Unix Clock and taking it back from the current date.
When this program is executed with the system clock set to todays date it
works fine.
When the system date is set artificially to a retrospective date ( date
0101990800 )
the program gives the Subject error and stops.
How can this be?
I have isolated the offending line "Select max(<field_name>) from
<table_name>
which incidentally is where the mistake occurs in a separate program and it
runs fine
for any system date that is set.
This leads one to believe that this is not really the cause.
I only ask this question for pointers or advice which might short cut my
voyage of discovery
if someone out there recognises these symptoms and knows the answer.
Thank You
