graphics builder question

Hallo,
I call a graph from a forms application. It plots a value as a function of date. Both value(number) and date are columns of a table. I would like, when there are many rows in the table not to display day on X-axis, just month and year, otherwise also display day.
Statically this is done just by checking the day box in date tab of X-axis properties.If I use auto step size the graph is not nice(so I use day step size).
How can I check this box programmatically ? Thanks in advance,
