How in the world do you easily format data for loading?

I recently obtained several 'largel files of data that was spooled in sqlplus from a client site. I am curious as to how I can 'automate' and make the process fo using SQLloader to load te data easier without having to go in with VI (no laughing out there) and formatting the data...ie. setting up all char fields with surrounding ' etc...
