Well, not so much a 'portability' problem, but you point is valid - the time involved maybe excessive for a large db on a slow server with IMP/EXP.

If the servers and OS releases are the same - and Oracle releases - a cold backup of the db may be a better alternative for a large db. Of course you'll get the entire db, but this may not be a problem. Run a recreate of the control files if the mount points are going to be different.
