How does an external application (say C or C++) exchange information with Oracle Financials?

It may be argued that Oracle Financials eventually read/write to an Oracle database and that any external application can thus deal directly with the database to get/set data. Unfortunately, this requires the application to understand Oracle Financials database schema. Moreover, Oracle Financials may not permit such direct access to its underlying tables.
