Oracle SDO or ESRI SDE?

We are currently using Oracle version 7.3.3 and we have ArcView version 3.1, We want to hold our spatial data in a managed database environment. However we are confused about what packages we require. If we use the Oracle Spatial Data Option (SDO) can we access the data directly from ArcView or do we require an additional piece of software, i.e. ESRI's SDE. If we have SDE do we need SDO.

If we moved to Oracle 8 would the situation be different, with the spatial data cartridge for example.
Are there any other third party options?
