ORA-12705 when using JDBC OCI driver to connect to oracle 7

Has anyone had any experience using JDBC OCI for Solaris v 2.5 to connect to an Oracle 7 db (same box). The documentation indicates that is error is referring to the NLS_LANG parameter; I corrected it by setting it specifically in my.profile, but still getting same message.
