This matter has now been resolved. It was caused by an ANSI mode COMMIT occuring elsewhere in the call-chain. The behaviour when a COMMIT occurs in ANSI mode is to close all explicit cursors. The solution is to set mode=ORACLE *for the PRO*C module which does the commit* when you compile.
