If you select one of the installation options other than "typical" install, it will ask you where you want files installed. This will produce dialogs that ask you where you want files for each component installed. It will still put a lot of .dll and .exe files in your regular Oracle home directory, but a lot of files will go into the directories you specify.

Also, you can install R2 in conjunction with R1. I have it running on 3 different machines that way.
