We are looking for beta testers for SQLEngineer, a replacement for isql, dbaccess, sqlplus, etc. It is written in 100% Java and will run on any platform that supports the 1.1Java Runtime Environment (This is an application, not an applet). It has been tested under Solaris, WinNT, Win95, and AIX (HP/UX later this week). SQLEngineer supports any database that provides a complete JDBC driver. Sybase 11, Oracle 7.3, Informix 7.2/8.1, and MS SQL Server 6.5 have all been tested using Weblogic's (http://www.weblogic.com) JDBC drivers.

We like to think of it as Visual C++/Visual Basic for SQL. It supports SQL color syntax coding, name completion (type in ac\tab and it fills in account), variables, "pretty" display of results. It uses a "Mathematica like" workbook GUI where multiple sql statements live in cells and can be evaluated individually or as a group per workbook. The user can have any number of Workbooks open and can have one executing queries while working on another.

Variables can be defined via SQL Engineer and used directly in the SQL, this allows you to put vendor specific or db specific sql in a variable and have the same SQL worksheet work against a test and a production db even if they are configured differently. (For Informix think of It provides documentation of the schema and elements in the schema for the database you are working with.

SQLEngineer also supports both a two tier and a managed three-tier architecture. Currently only the two tier is ready for beta testing. The managed middle tier will allow for queuing of queries and load balancing. It also provides a log of all actions performed in a database and the timing of that action. This allows the administrator to view how long queries were in the In Queue and RunQueue. The administrator can also see what tables are queried and can tune the database as needed.

SQLEngineer Enterprise Edition will also contain source code control and work group oriented features. We are also working on a workflow application that allows business analysts to submit queries to adhoc sql programmers in a managed environment.

The beta program should start in two or so weeks. We are looking for feedback on requested features, etc.
If you are interested please send email to: info_at_watershed.com
With the host operating system and database vendor and the client configuration (operating system and JDBC driver vendor).

Thanks,
