Many thanks. I actually figured it out today but you confirmed everything! My conclusion is that the GUI import/export is not very friendly. Also in general if you aren't doing something correctly, Oracle is very bad about diagnosing the problem. On the plus side, if you do what you are supposed to do it works very well!
