Well, I wouldn't believe everything I read or was told, especially when you start with such large numbers. The real answer is "it all depends".
It depends on your hardware (as in - lets compare like with like); it depends on what software you have (have you loaded a decent system management tool, backup tool etc on top of the native, raw, Unix?); and how much yuu spend.
And it depends what you want: lets say I have a requirement for a highly available server. Transactions are low, but the up time must be very high. I have a number of options:
- Non-stop UNIX. Thats Tandem or the like. Very very expensive.
- I could use an HA UNIX, say Solaris. But for these type of systems I have to go to Enterprise solutions and an external disk array (so say SUN, I asked them this week). Total cost estimate (from SUN) is £100K (thats UK sterling).
- I could use NT-Enterprise, two NT systems, and an external disk array. List price £25K (List price from TANDEM PC division, again UK Sterling).
Common, guys. We've all faced more difficult decisions than this in our work!
So - the answer is - it depends. There is no universal right answer.
However, if I want raw, unadulterated performance, then I agree UNIX will beat NT (at present.....!)
