It seems quite obvious to me:
01011997
nn/nn/nnnn
01/11/97
I believe that with this format mask, you explicitly *must* enter the slashes (or any other delimiter), since in this case Forms replaces the digits with slashes as it says in the mask. If you try to enter "01x11x97" you'd get the same result... I think.
