we've been running reports on our unix boxes for 5 or so years... from reportwriter1.1 through reports2.5. we've set up a job submission system with database pipes that allows the client (windows and/or mac) to invoke the report. it then gets executed in a 'batch-like' mode on the unix server and then printed.

we pushed postscript as 'the' suggested output format because we could get pretty output. now when we're trying to deploy out to some remote offices, the bandwidth issue is wicked. sometimes i wish we'd stuck with ascii!! mind you, PDF and HTML are potential solutions...

so, yes, it can be done. and running the reports on a unix server frees up your client (especially if it is windows 3.1!) for other work...

we had a bit of a problem with font mapping issues. things that looked ok when run on a pc kind of 'sucked' when run on the hp servers. all that meant was a little trial and error to get things cleaned up, and some suggestions for which fonts to use....
