Designer/2000 is one of the best the ways forward for client server application development in my view. All my databases on Oracle so I have no problem in using des2000, it supports ANSI SQL databases.

There are two major benefits;
(1) You can do top down process modelling/analysis/entity modelling right
down to server as well as client generation and all the definitions are stored in the repository or you canreverse engineer a database and retrofit back to entities.
(2) Generation supports Dev2000, VB and Web. It is possible to build apps
100% generated, there are a number of limitations right now. But newer versions should address those. VB generation is good but Web generation is not suitable for secure systems as yet.

The thumb rule to get most enefits from Des2000 is to build detailed all the business rules in to the databases using the databases. The more logic you have managed to build into the database the better.

Complexity of the system on the server side is no problem, but complexity of client generation has limits. There are also some small problems with its gui interface, which I am told will be fixed in 2.0 Hope this helps. Received on Wed Aug 13 1997 - 00:00:00 CEST
