PL/SQL varuable or SQLPLUS bind variable passed to UNIX ksh script

We've not been able to find a way to:
[Quoted] 1. Have sqlplus do anything with a bind variable except display it or
use it in a procedure call; that is, there doesn't appear to be a way to
use it in an exit statement so that the UNIX script can see the value
($?).
2. Execute a host command like "export STATUS = :status" in PL/SQL or in SQLPLUS.
What is the best way to get sqlplus bind variable or a PL/SQL variable returned to the shell script?
