Year 2000 is a leap year, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not. Read about it at http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/Things/gregorian_calendar.html

Usually years divisible by 4 are leap years, except for centuries which are not divisible by 400.
