Unfortuanately yes, when-custom-item-event works for VBX's but not OCX's but Oracle advise an ugly workaround to write a when-timer-expired trigger to constantly check the item's properties for state changes. Their argument for the moment is that events ultimately change an item's properties so if you cannot trap the event itself you can tackle the problem from the opposite direction by intrigating the item's properties. No doubt this will change in later releases.
