You don't have to wait until Oracle8 - Pro*C 2.1 (available with Oracle 7.2) provided a new command-line option PARSE which allows you to turn off the full parsing of your program. Also, many of the problems with parsing C constructs were fixed by this version, or Pro*C 2.2 with Oracle 7.3.

Pro*C 1.x is no longer shipped, so you have to upgrade Pro*C if you upgrade the database anyhow.
